The Portfolio Finance team is a dynamic team focused on supporting GPPM (Global Portfolio & Project Management), the Global Product Teams and senior governing bodies (Late Stage Portfolio Committee (LSPC), Early Stage Portfolio Committee (ESPC) and SET) with R&D project and portfolio decisions.
This unique position in the team offers an individual an exceptional opportunity for direct exposure to senior management across the organisation, combined with exposure to AstraZeneca’s portfolio and business issues affecting the Group’s current performance and strategic initiatives.
About this role:
Partnering Directly with the Decision Support & Analytics team (DS&A) and the broader GPPM organisation, this role is the key interface between GPPM and the wider project, TA Finance and Group Finance teams to ensure consistency in Valuation methodology and excellence in Portfolio Analytics.
This role provides high quality and consistent project value, forecast and portfolio information and analytics for use by senior review bodies in making portfolio investment decisions. The analysis prepared will support the communication to, and the decisions made, by the critical project review bodies in AstraZeneca.
This role demands a person who is a self-starter, proactive and able to work with individuals at all levels in the organisation. It will feature significant exposure to AZ Senior Leaders. You will be expected to develop a broad and deep understanding of the AZ portfolio to enable you to act as a subject matter expert for the AZ Portfolio.
Accountabilities/Responsibilities:
- Business Partner to the DS&A team and multiple senior stakeholders across the GPPM organisation; act as the key interface between the GPPM team and R&D finance, TA Finance and Group Finance
- Lead Finance activities for quarterly Portfolio Reviews partnering with GPPM as well as annual deliverables; set out framework and guidance across the enterprise and multiple finance teams; provide detailed financial analytics to directly support senior governance decision making. Support Portfolio Finance Director in execution of TA Strategy and X-TA to deliver enterprise Prioritisation and Portfolio Optimisation.
- Ownership of R&D valuation methodology. Provide subject matter expertise and guidance across R&D Finance (and beyond); maintain and champion Valuation tools. Drive automation opportunities across project and portfolio valuation spaces
- Drive and maintain full portfolio valuation and associated key analytics:
- Expert user and champion of portfolio system (PIVOT) ensuring it is exploited to provide insightful views and analysis through portfolio review and TA strategy processes. Interface with GPPM systems experts in improvement to work directly on PIVOT system updates impacting finance.
- Partner with GPPM on multiple enterprise level improvement initiatives
- Interface with Group FP&A for LRP process with provision of pipeline sales forecasts and PTRS gained through critical knowledge of broad AZ pipeline
- Direct R&D External Project analytics, working with the R&D Analysts to support Business Cycle (LRP, RBUs, QBR, LSPC / ESPC meetings)
- Mentoring of R&D and Portfolio Analysts within team to support work streams and provide guidance on decision making and prioritisation of work.
- Work seamlessly across R&D Finance with FP&A, TA aligned Projects & Portfolio, Finance BPs

Minimum Requirements – Education and Experience
- The role holder will be a qualified finance professional (or equivalent)
- Broad business / financial experience
- Knowledge of project valuation techniques
- Experience of working within multi-disciplinary, cross-cultural teams
- Experience of Global working

- Analytical thinking - ability to collate & analyse data and identify key drivers of value
- Strong Excel financial modelling and PowerPoint skills – proactive in exploring innovative or new systems solutions
- Financial evaluation techniques (projects, investments, etc.)

- Ability to interact and engage with senior managers in the business
